Solve My Space is:
Tinka Markham Piper, Co-Founder and Chaos Counselor
At the age of 10, I organized and catalogued my bookshelves according to the Dewey decimal system, made my brother check out books and charged him late fees. During high school and college, my favorite pastime was to rearrange our living space (weekly!), much to the exasperation of my roommates. As an adult, visits to friends and family naturally turn into organizing sessions—cleaning out closets, moving furniture around, tackling bathroom drawers and weeding through kids’ toys. I can’t help myself—I walk into any room and immediately start reconstructing the environment.
My background and work experience are in social work and public health. I’ve worked in academic, clinical and research settings primarily in managing and leading projects from design to implementation. I love creating opportunities for others to learn and grow, I love building systems and seeing if they work, I love developing relationships and helping people. I also love design websites, felt boxes, stationery stores, storage containers and label makers. Solve My Space is an attempt to reconcile all these interests and work to improve peoples’ lives by transforming their most personal spaces.

People ask me a lot of interesting questions. How to politely decline an invitation from an ex-boyfriend who suddenly wants to go out for a beer? Where to find sequined ballet flats in aubergine for a five year-old? What to get your mother-in-law for her 66th birthday? Where to go on a romantic weekend getaway in October? At some point, I became my co-worker and friends’ go-to source for the answers to the most random, but important, life questions. Whether I actually know the answer at the precise moment they ask is irrelevant – though strangely, most of the time, I somehow do. With some bonus background information sprinkled in for good measure. Oh how I LOVE to solve life’s little puzzles! Without knowing precisely how this happened, over the years I seem to have earned my badge as a resourceful lifestyle generalist.
My training in architecture and design, followed by a few years of fact-finding and argumentative reasoning in the profession of law, have helped me to become a passionate and vocal advocate of all things great and wonderful and fun. I believe that good design should be applied to all aspects of life in addition to space and objects. It’s an integral part of one’s approach to life and a key element of what informs personal style. With Solve My Space, I hope to bring this idea to life: by tackling one important lifestyle question at a time!
Isabelle Roy
Archivist
