From overflowing storage closet to inspiring home office

It’s really fun to work on a project where you see significant results quickly. Here, a client was interested in transforming a closet/storage space into a home office for her business. We made a lot of progress together in just 3 sessions—and what helps so much is that she also accomplished a lot of work in between sessions and afterwards.

The storage room was initially intended to be a walk-in style closet since there are no windows in the room. Two large Ikea Pax wardrobes took up a large part of the room and over time and a new baby, it filled with just baby accessories and boxes of pre-pregnancy clothing. The room became so cluttered that it was no longer used for anything other than a room for storage and junk. Since the baby arrived, the client is trying to rearrange her home in order to create a bedroom for her child. So we decided to move her home office into this room.

During this project, we ended up throwing away 11 bags of garbage and donating 7 bags of clothing and assorted accessories along with an old suitcase. The bags of donations we given to Le Chainon on Saint-Laurent Street in the Plateau Mont Royal.

The door to the room was removed and stored. White eco-friendly Benjamin Moore paint was chosen in Mountain Peak White to cover the old peachy colour. White Ikea office furniture was purchased so that the room could stay as airy as possible. The desk and chair already belonged to the client. A ceiling lamp from Home Depot replaced the old Ikea track lighting.

My client re-used her old desk from a few years ago that was being used as the family’s dining-room table. It was actually a perfect fit for the little nook in the room. My client tells me that one of her favourite things about her new home office is that there is a place for everything!

A makeover for a sisters’ bedroom

Ihave 2 favorite parts about working in homes. First, the collaboration + teamwork necessary to make any project a success. And second, seeing transformations occur and the joy (and often relief) it brings to my clients. In this case, a double salon was initially used as an office + living room space. It was then converted into a bedroom for 2 sisters but lacked a cohesive sense of design + flow for the family.

By dividing the room into 2 zones (sleeping + playing), we were able to create an inspiring space. My client and I worked together to declutter the entire room, remove furniture and create a new plan for the space. She and her husband then followed through with all the elements, including building some of the furniture (including the white desk, and a pull-out bed for guests under the bunk bed). Here’s to collaboration!

Solve my vanity! My cosmetics collection needs a home

Ilove collections–and I have a number of them. Ceramic planters, pompoms, coffee mugs and vintage pieces, to name a few.  So I understand when I receive an email, “My collection of ______ is getting out of control and I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

In this case, a client had a gorgeous collection of make-up that was piling up on the floor and spilling into her bedroom. She was neither able to use her cosmetics nor enjoy them because of the stress they caused her.  So together, we did applied the 3-tiered plan: declutter, organize + design.

We took EVERYTHING out of boxes, containers + closets. We created piles for keeping, trash, recycling and donations.  Once we knew exactly what would remain, we could discuss a range of organizational ideas to figure out the ones that would work for HER.  Not for me, but for her daily life.  That is something so critical to my work is not imposing solutions but collectively brainstorming them so that they will last.

She found an image online of a space that she really liked, so we recreated the look by combining IKEA furniture.  Unfortunately I do not have photos of the insides of drawers because they were fantastic! My client had the best time organizing each drawer according to different categories, using smaller bins + containers to make sure everything had a home.

Overwhelmed by paperwork: Setting up a productive home office

“I‘m drowning in my papers and I don’t know what to do!” Organizing paperwork is one of my favorite jobs.  In short, you take piles and piles, whittle them down to the essentials and create systems to follow to prevent the paper overwhelm in the future. Yes, it can be time-consuming but it’s time well-spent.  And now, given the numerous digital options for reducing + managing paperwork, there are so many ways to tailor solutions to meet individual + household needs.

In this case, my client was setting up her home office and needed help dealing with years of paperwork build-up as well as creating a filing system for the household.  We filled trash bags with recycling and several boxes to shred.  We worked together to find the best solution for her to make sure that it could be maintained over the long-term. Success!

My basement is swallowing me whole…SOS!

“My basement is an unchartered territory. I don’t even know what is down there anymore. And I certainly don’t know where to begin.”

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry. Your mess and stress is my opportunity to help you make a huge shift in your home.

In this case, a basement had become overwhelmed. Furniture, boxes, piles of clothes, items from previous owners, storage, and more.  The family was unable to use the basement because so much had accumulated over the years.  And understandably, it was unclear where to start with all the layers of objects and their accompanying emotions.

SaveSave

The recycling pile was mountainous and we filled a car several times over to the brink with donations.
SaveSave

Over several sessions, we worked together to identify everything in the space.

SaveSave

As part of the basement overhaul, we hired a handywoman to fix the ceilings, paint the walls and install a new sink area.  We tailored and IKEA shelving unit to fit the space for organized storage. And the next step is the extra fun one—adding a couch and some furniture for the kids to make it a fun and cosy play space.

Mission accomplished!

A “nightmare” storage room gets a new look

One day, I received this email: ” I have a small office space that needs decluttering, organizing and designing, and a storage room that is an absolute nightmare. You look at this and think, “I have been waiting for this!” Please help!” I LOVE these projects! Your mess + stress is an opportunity for me to come in and work some magic. It’s always a collaborative process and always, in the words of Marie Forleo, FIGUREOUTABLE!

So I hear this often–a room or a space in one’s home has become a dumping ground. We all have junk drawers or junk closets and sometimes even junk rooms or homes….!  It’s similar to a garden with such an abundance of weeds that you can’t even see the flowers. And if you only take out a few weeds, you don’t see much of a difference. So you have to go full force, dig deep and get to the root of the problem. Ok, garden analogy over now.SaveSave

In this case, our first step was identifying what was not working in the space as well as the future goals and hopes for the room.  We came up with 2 main “zones”: a pantry area + work space. SaveSave

</div>

[/et_pb_ds_before_after_slider]

For the pantry area, we removed the closet and decluttered everything in sight.  Next step was the installation of a new piece of furniture as well as a concrete plan for the different sections of the pantry.  By using bins + baskets, we categorized items and created clear “homes” for everything.  And by adding some decor and a new rug, we cheered up the space as well.
