From overflowing storage closet to inspiring home office

It’s really fun to work on a project where you see significant results quickly. Here, a client was interested in transforming a closet/storage space into a home office for her business. We made a lot of progress together in just 3 sessions—and what helps so much is that she also accomplished a lot of work in between sessions and afterwards.

The storage room was initially intended to be a walk-in style closet since there are no windows in the room. Two large Ikea Pax wardrobes took up a large part of the room and over time and a new baby, it filled with just baby accessories and boxes of pre-pregnancy clothing. The room became so cluttered that it was no longer used for anything other than a room for storage and junk. Since the baby arrived, the client is trying to rearrange her home in order to create a bedroom for her child. So we decided to move her home office into this room.

SaveSave

During this project, we ended up throwing away 11 bags of garbage and donating 7 bags of clothing and assorted accessories along with an old suitcase. The bags of donations we given to Le Chainon on Saint-Laurent Street in the Plateau Mont Royal.

The door to the room was removed and stored. White eco-friendly Benjamin Moore paint was chosen in Mountain Peak White to cover the old peachy colour. White Ikea office furniture was purchased so that the room could stay as airy as possible. The desk and chair already belonged to the client. A ceiling lamp from Home Depot replaced the old Ikea track lighting.

My client re-used her old desk from a few years ago that was being used as the family’s dining-room table. It was actually a perfect fit for the little nook in the room. My client tells me that one of her favourite things about her new home office is that there is a place for everything!

A makeover for a sisters’ bedroom

Ihave 2 favorite parts about working in homes. First, the collaboration + teamwork necessary to make any project a success. And second, seeing transformations occur and the joy (and often relief) it brings to my clients. In this case, a double salon was initially used as an office + living room space. It was then converted into a bedroom for 2 sisters but lacked a cohesive sense of design + flow for the family.

By dividing the room into 2 zones (sleeping + playing), we were able to create an inspiring space. My client and I worked together to declutter the entire room, remove furniture and create a new plan for the space. She and her husband then followed through with all the elements, including building some of the furniture (including the white desk, and a pull-out bed for guests under the bunk bed). Here’s to collaboration!

Choosing redesign over moving: a complete makeover for a living room

The vision for this living room was a completely new look, one that was Scandinavian inspired. The first step was purging and donating furniture items, with the exception of the large red armoire, so that we started with a blank canvas for recreating the living space. With the help of a design board, inspired by Holly Becker’s book, Decorate Workshop, we began by deciding on colour tones and textures for the space.

SaveSave

My client was looking for a combination of modern and vintage pieces as well as pops of colour with accessories and seasonal touches. In addition, we wanted to create an office in the living area to increase its use and functionality. The space evolved over the course of a year as finding pieces that you love for a home takes time, patience and yes, investments! The end result is a beautifully curated home that feels wonderful to be in, calming, comforting and all around joyful.

A custom office area was designed and constructed by David Baumflek of Atelier Assembly, and a number of the vintage pieces were found at Boutique Spoutnick. The gorgeous pillows were made by Gloria Ramia of Les Petits Vichy and Lorna Syson.

A guest room/home office transforms into a gorgeous nursery

“Help, I’m blocked and I don’t know what to do!” My clients often have a vision for a room and lots of ideas but they don’t a) know where to get started, b) trust themselves or c) know where to find what they are looking for. Oh I love those jobs!  A lot of my work is figuring out what someone really wants in their home, how they want their home to feel and how it needs to work for their daily lives.

In this case, a creative client had a number of ideas for her daughter’s nursery but she didn’t know where to begin.  The nursery would be in her home office and she had purchased a huge mirror (coup d’coeur) and didn’t know how to incorporate into the overall plan.  Could she keep such a massive piece in a baby’s room?  She had also made a colorful and awesome mobile to hang somewhere.  She was eager to have a “succulents” theme and integrate some artwork that she had collected for the baby.  And she wanted the room to feel relaxing + inspiring.

Together, we created the overall design for the room–where we would place the larger objects and where we would add accents + color. We we went shopping around her home, finding pieces that she could repurpose in new ways.  By adding copper fairy lights to the mirror and creating a breastfeeding/reading area in front, the mirror became an unusual and gorgeous touch to a sophisticated yet accessible nursery.

She texted later to say, “Merci TELLEMENT pour ton aide. J’étais vraiment bloquée … maintenant tout est ci claire!  Best nursery ever!”  I loved working with her on this project!

Solve my vanity! My cosmetics collection needs a home

Ilove collections–and I have a number of them. Ceramic planters, pompoms, coffee mugs and vintage pieces, to name a few.  So I understand when I receive an email, “My collection of ______ is getting out of control and I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

In this case, a client had a gorgeous collection of make-up that was piling up on the floor and spilling into her bedroom. She was neither able to use her cosmetics nor enjoy them because of the stress they caused her.  So together, we did applied the 3-tiered plan: declutter, organize + design.

SaveSave

We took EVERYTHING out of boxes, containers + closets. We created piles for keeping, trash, recycling and donations.  Once we knew exactly what would remain, we could discuss a range of organizational ideas to figure out the ones that would work for HER.  Not for me, but for her daily life.  That is something so critical to my work is not imposing solutions but collectively brainstorming them so that they will last.

She found an image online of a space that she really liked, so we recreated the look by combining IKEA furniture.  Unfortunately I do not have photos of the insides of drawers because they were fantastic! My client had the best time organizing each drawer according to different categories, using smaller bins + containers to make sure everything had a home.

From renovation to full design: a living space evolves

While I enjoy design magazines and pinterest, I’m always drawn to the before/afters of home projects. I love seeing how a home or a room or a space evolves over time and it always does take TIME.  A lot of time.

Below you’ll find three photos of a living room redesign over the course of a year: from the actual reconstruction of the home to the moving and unpacking and then the final product. There is a lot of beautiful natural light in this space and the focus was on creating a colorful living space that would pop with the walls and the whitewashed floors.

From messy construction site to a bright new nursery

When I met my client, she was 6 months pregnant, working full-time and overseeing a complete renovation of her home. Busy!  She loved all the aspects of managing the renovation yet was uncertain how to proceed with designing her daughter’s nursery.  She knew she wanted to incorporate certain elements–natural images, a quiet space for nursing + reading as well as creating a bright space.  Together we came up with a plan for the space and the end result is a gorgeous and welcoming place for a little girl!

A dining room goes POP!

This is a project that I loved working on as it involved a room-by-room transformation. The family was thinking of moving but once they looked at the options and realized how much they loved their home, they decided to invest in a complete makeover. Given the budget involved in such a project, one room was tackled at a time with incredible detail and organization, thanks to my client who was a natural in the process. My role was to act as a a “design coach” throughout, linking her to resources + ideas, providing feedback throughout and being a sounding board for decisions.

We’re selling our home and need a plan from A-Z!

Moving is considered to be one of the top 5 stressors in life. Even if it’s a positive move or change, it can still be extremely stressful and overwhelming. So when the anxiety kicks in and you feel stuck and distressed, that’s where I come in.  I’m objective, neutral and I love to plan!

Here, I created a room-by-room action plan to help a family prepare their home for sale as well as start the moving and packing process.  There was such a terrific vintage vibe in the apartment that it was fun to play around with different elements. Decluttering + getting rid of a lot of items was key to being able to highlight each room as well as make unpacking on the other end a lot easier. My client invested a lot of time and energy in following the plan but it was a success. Home sold and new home purchased!

Overwhelmed by paperwork: Setting up a productive home office

“I‘m drowning in my papers and I don’t know what to do!” Organizing paperwork is one of my favorite jobs.  In short, you take piles and piles, whittle them down to the essentials and create systems to follow to prevent the paper overwhelm in the future. Yes, it can be time-consuming but it’s time well-spent.  And now, given the numerous digital options for reducing + managing paperwork, there are so many ways to tailor solutions to meet individual + household needs.

In this case, my client was setting up her home office and needed help dealing with years of paperwork build-up as well as creating a filing system for the household.  We filled trash bags with recycling and several boxes to shred.  We worked together to find the best solution for her to make sure that it could be maintained over the long-term. Success!
